The Artistry of Blending: A Tribute to Nature’s Harmony
Harvest 2023 has come to a close. The last of our estate grapes were gathered on January 20, with our final haul from other regional vineyard sites arriving on February 9. With the frenzied pace of the harvest behind us, we now turn our attention to the delicate and precise artistry of blending (assemblage).
Blending requires the selection and harmonising of wines from different areas and grape varieties. Our winemaking team is currently working with an astounding 160 individual base wines which include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from our estate (60%) with the rest sourced from the nine other geographical areas of Napier, Bonnievale, Robertson, Slanghoek, Stellenbosch, Elgin, Durbanville, Darling and Malmesbury.
This rich palette of flavours allows the winemaking team to create the perfect blend for each of the Cap Classiques in our portfolio, whether to reflect the signature house style of our Classic collection or to encapsulate the best expression of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for our Vintage and Icon tiers/collections. Part artistry, part alchemy, Cellar Master Pierre de Klerk's goal is to create a consistent collection of Cap Classique that perfectly encapsulates the Graham Beck DNA. Like a perfumer creating a unique fragrance, we wish our maestro the best as he works to bottle the essence of vintage 2023.
