Opposites Attract In Graham Beck’s Captivating New Duo

Following the exclusive maiden release of the Extended Lees Ageing, an exciting new “double bill” dubbed Yin & Yang, is the latest addition to join the ranks of the elite Artisan Collection range by Graham Beck.

Yin & Yang captures the spirit of Graham Beck’s meticulous attention to detail and dedication to this specialised craft. “We are proud to be recognised as leaders and pioneers in this challenging style, always on the forefront of developments in this remarkable evolution of the bubble,” says Graham Beck Cellarmaster Pieter Ferreira.

 

The story begins in early May of 2016, as Pieter and Winemaker Pierre Klerk embarked on their final classification tasting of the year`s base wines.  “This followed after many selection tastings, in the build-up to establishing the purest ultimate expression of the vintage – the one finally singled out for our prestigious Cap Classique,” Pieter explains.

 

Eventually Pierre created an astonishing final blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, with a delicate blush colour. Both Pieter and Pierre were elated with this particular fusion of these two fundamental and timeless bubbly cultivars.

 

Pieter suggested to also look at a mirror image of the blend by using the same components, but with Chardonnay in the lead role. They sampled the two blends in black glasses (the ultimate test for any taster, compelling the taster to focus on the intrinsics, without being influenced by the appearance). The results? They loved both blends – giving rise to the genesis of Yin & Yang.

 

The philosophy behind these bubblies is both fascinating and compelling. While the world is composed of so many different, sometimes opposing forces, these can all co-exist and even complement each other.

 

The very nature of yin-yang lies in the interchange and interplay of these two components. This can be related to the use of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in crafting premium sparkling wines. The two ‘forces’ of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are opposing, yet completely complementary to one another in Cap Classique blending.

 

Yin (Pinot Noir) displays an inward earthly energy, which contributes complexity and structure while Yang (Chardonnay) displays an outward heavenly energy, characterised by supreme elegance and finesse.

 

“It’s all about accepting life’s contrasts and celebrating these differences. Blending Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Cap Classique is not that different to understanding these fundamental lessons and a harmonious balance is critical,” comments Pieter.

 

With its charming salmon pink hue and vibrant red berry and blackcurrant aromas, Yin exudes notes of warm, savoury allspice and features great length on the palate. Yang delights with tinges of sun-kissed apricot and rich, ripe citrus aromas, while the palate boasts a vibrant entry, together with delectable nuances of juicy yellow fruit and lemon zest.

 

The intriguing and alluring appeal of this dynamic duo is the fact that there simply is no right or wrong which becomes clearer when you taste them side by side.  Yin & Yang celebrate life’s compelling and captivating contrasts – proving that opposites can co-exist and complement each other perfectly. Both blends highlight these two cultivars’ unique and subtle interplay, and the magic they bring to the sum of the parts.

 

Yin & Yang will only be available to purchase in a pair, packaged in an attractive gift box.   Produced in extremely niche quantities this duo will be released on the 1st of October and will retail for R980 in South Africa.
